A brand-new studio with more vigor…

Jads Tattoo was located at the Shisha Bar complex in Thamel, Kathmandu, for 15 years. The studio was just about 380 square feet, which was too little to operate in while yet keeping the highest level of cleanliness. We were looking for potential sites near Thamel as the desire to relocate to a larger space had already started. In Kathmandu, purchasing land is simpler than leasing a space. We had nothing but expectations that we would find Jads the ideal space.

As 2020 officially began, thousands of people were being dead daily by the COVID-19 pandemic. For the sake of stopping the spread, all businesses were closing. We weren’t forgotten either. There wasn’t anything we could do but close down the business until things went back to normal. Time had passed quickly, yet there was no chance that everything would get back to normal. Day by day, it was getting worse. The only thing we could do at the time was to maintain our patience.

Because the studio in Thamel was unsuitable due to the severe restrictions, John Ma acquired a modest private studio in Arun Thapa Chowk, Sanepa, Lalitpur to continue work there throughout the pandemic. He only saw customers by appointment and had a small clientele. He and the studio had a difficult time surviving at the time. I was in Dharan during the pandemic along with Bimal Dai, Hobbit, Emihang, and Porku because there was no other option except to leave Kathmandu and stay safe at our house.

The pandemic took two years to subside. Since the majority of our furniture and equipment being ruined by moisture, the old studio was no longer usable. Mushrooms were sprouting up within the studio, a symbol that nature was assuming reign over everything. As soon as things began to return to normal, John Dai and I started looking for a new home. We learned that the Kathmandu Art House, a building owned by the Kathmandu Guest House in Thamel, was looking for tenants. The most well-known artists in Nepal had two levels of the building completely booked. Each room belonged to a different artist, who used it as a sort of personal gallery where they sold their artwork. The third floor had not yet been filled. The building’s sales and marketing executive gave us a tour, and we immediately felt at home there. The entire third level was promptly reserved by us. The fact that there had renovation going on there was generally agreeable to us.

We started designing the space, adding new furniture, paintings, and hanging our whole collection of paintings. For the studio, there were three terraces, and none of them had canopies. We also constructed a canopy for them and began planting gardens there. The entire project took us two months to complete. Client demands have already started to come in. Yogi began working at the new studio while on his way to Nepal at that time. But the studio hasn’t fully developed yet. We continue to improve the studio’s aesthetics and design to this day. Since everything here is about the process, it will take some time. The vegetation is expanding daily, and the terrace sections are beginning to resemble a true garden with natural greenery.
